Most are equipped with heavy, speed, and double-end bags, a mirror or two, and they are pungent with sweat. But how does a boxing gym become an icon in itself, making fighters come half-way-around the world just to soak up the atmosphere? Over time there have been many legendary gyms, but the modern era has been defined by the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. In 2001, Manny Pacquiao, a complete unknown, entered the gym to hopefully work the mitts with Wildcard owner and legendary trainer Freddie Roach. He felt a connection to the place and he has never left.
