The Heroes of Coast Guard Station Chatham

  • The “Finest Hours” is a movie about the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history. The crew of the Chatham Lifeboat Station, now named the Chatham Coast Guard Station, risked their lives during a full-scale nor’easter on Feb. 18, 1952. The rescue crew battled 60-foot waves off the coast of Cape Cod and rescued 32 men from the tanker vessel Pendleton that split apart during the storm.  The motto of the Coast Guard rescue crew who performed this mission was “You have to go out, but you don’t have to come back.”
These are the heroes of Coast Guard Station Chatham ready to risk their lives to save others today.
